How To Use Calculations in Excel

This is a short lesson on how to calculate “Quantity” multiplied by “Unit Price” to get a total of the sale. We will then also be looking at how to calculate a grand total for your spreadsheet.

Step 1:

Once you have prepared your cells and fields, click in the “total” column (indicated in red). This is the cell where your “Quantity” will be multiplied with your “Unit Price”.

Step 2:

Once your have selected the “Total” Cell, type the following:

+ C2*D2

This tells Excel that you would like to multiply the contents of “C2” (Quantity) with “D2” (Unit Price)

Then Press enter. Your total for that row will now appear in the total column as shown below:

Step 3:

Next we need to “copy” this calculation to the rows below, in order for excel to calculate totals for all your rows.

To do this, we select the cell which we just calculated. Now drag this cell down by clicking and dragging it by its “bottom right corner” / handle. Drag this cell down until the end of the rows you wish to calculate:

You now have totals for each row as shown below:

Step 4:

Now we need a grand total for our sales. To do this, select the following rows: (from the first calculated total, up until and including the cell in which your grand total should appear)

Once you have selected the necessary cells, click on the “SUM” button as indicated here:

This will SUM (add) your “Totals” rows, and calculate your Grand Total:

You now have functional calculations in your spreadsheet.
